Mathematical Reasoning with Connection Logo

What is MRWC?

MRWC is a new fourth year mathematics course designed to prepare students for the expectations and rigor of college mathematics and quantitative reasoning courses.  It reinforces and builds on mathematical topics and skills developed in Integrated 1-3 (or Algebra 1-2 and Geometry).  It is designed as a bridge to both STEM and non-STEM majors.

Is there a connection between MRWC and ERWC?

MRWC is modeled after CSU’s ERWC as a rigorous and challenging college prep mathematics course.  It is designed to serve the same population of students as ERWC.

Does the MRWC curriculum follow the CA Framework for Advanced Mathematics?

Yes, the MRWC’s curriculum covers all the optional + (plus) standards from Integrated Mathematics 3 (Algebra 2) and most of the standards included in the curriculum in the CA Mathematics Framework for PreCalculus.

Does MRWC replace Precalculus?

MRWC is written to serve as a bridge course between Integrated Math 3 (Algebra 2) and one of following courses:

  • College GE course in mathematics, statistics or quantitative reasoning.
  • PreCalculus
  • Calculus course designed as an alternative to AP Calculus

What topics are included in the MRWC curriculum?

A table of contents is available on this website.  Contact us with additional questions about what is included in the curriculum.

Will MRWC satisfy ‘a-g’?

Yes, MRWC has program status with a ‘c’ designation for advanced mathematics.

Will MRWC meet the EAP Conditional requirement for a senior year of mathematics?

Yes, it will meet the EAP Conditional requirement for SBAC=3 students at all CSU campuses.

Will MRWC validate a D grade in a lower-level course?

Yes, a C grade or better in MRWC will validate a grade of D in lower-level mathematics classes.

What curriculum materials are provided by MRWC?

  • MRWC Teacher Edition containing content discussion, student acitvities and exercises, and pedagogical suggestions for delivering the curriculum.
  • Classroom set of all mathematical puzzle games.
  • PDF of Student Workbook to be copied by the district.

How many schools are offering MRWC?

49 schools are offering at least on section of MRWC in 2018-19.

Can I look through the curriculum materials?

Some sample pages are available on this website.  Contact us and we will arrange for you to look through more of the curriculum materials

Can I visit an MRWC classroom?

Contact us and we will arrange a visit to a nearby school.  If there is no nearby school, we will put you in touch with some MRWC teachers or coaches.

Is there any data on how well the curriculum compares with other courses?

We have preliminary end-of-year data from an assessment given by an external evaluator that indicates that MRWC outperformed PreCalculus students by one-half letter grade. Contact us for additional data analysis information.

Will students be college-ready in mathematics after taking MRWC?

CSU-bound students who earn a C grade or higher in MRWC will be given college-ready status (CSU Category 3) in quantitative reasoning/mathematics when entering as freshmen at the institutions listed below:

  • Cal Poly Pomona
  • CSU Long Beach
  • CSU San Bernardino
  • San Jose State University

CCC-bound students who earn a C grade or higher in MRWC will be able to register for PreCalculus when entering as freshman at the institutions listed below:

  • College of the Desert
  • Moreno Valley College
  • Norco College
  • Riverside Community College

Additional institutions are currently in discussion to similarly recognize a C grade or higher in MRWC.

What are students and teachers saying about MRWC?

Sample responses to online surveys taken by MRWC teachers and students are available on this website.
